I was reminded today of a friendship I had as a teenager, when I spent around half an hour each day talking to a young man in his back garden. I used to leave my bike at their house when I caught the bus to school, while the rest of his family sat inside, convinced there was something more going on, but nothing ever happened. I was too shy to do the asking, and I must assume that either I did not float his boat or that his shyness mirrored mine. It is a lovely memory of a happy time, when relationships were quite simple.
I was only 12, after all!
My 10 year old daughter has had a persistent admirer who phones to "ask her out." She says NO every time and replaces the receiver, and in seconds it is ringing again. The cycle continues , undeterred by her rejection until I either unplug it or bury it under cushions.
His courage is admirable....
