My eldest daughter is 17.
She is talented, clever, and beautiful. She has her whole life ahead of her, and is applying to universities. She wears a size 6 or 8 in clothes, which is normal. I did when I was her age, before I gave birth to 7 children.
She told me this morning that she feels guilty for being thin.
She feels people look at her and expect her to be a bimbo.
Fashion week has reopened the debate about what is attractive, calling these young girls such derogatory things as stick insects and twigs.
How about we all learn to be comfortable within our own skin, and stop concerning ourselves with how everyone looks, or saying it is better to be curvy, or bony? True beauty is what shines out from within, in our love and our kindness.
True beauty is a ready smile, a generosity of spirit, hands quick to help and words to encourage and support.
I stand up for Beauty- whatever form it takes!
...I'd have got rid of it too....friend of mine has a mirror that makes one look much slimmer....love it....even though...of course...one should accept the way one looks...

Funnily enough Olivia Stefanino has just been on Radio Bristol talking about this and saying we should love ourselves as we are. You might like her web site:

and her campaign for FEBRUARY 13TH IS “LOVE YOURSELF DAY”.
Good luck to your daughter. I doubt if many 17 year olds are happy with the way they look - all part of growing up.
