We must be a marketing man's dream, standing in front of the chiller cabinet choosing smoothies just because they're wearing knitted bobble hats. 50p from each sale is going to Age Concern, and there's 50p off for 2 BUT the ultimate selling point has to be the woolly hats.
Five years ago we were nearly homeless at Christmas so I have a special reason for wanting to support charities who work with the homeless; it was another example of having to maintain focus and good spirits in the face of apparent madness. The local press became involved because my daughter went missing, and tried to turn me into some "No room at the inn," story, and attracting some unwelcome attention from women's magazines wanting to buy my story, if I would provide photos. I declined.
My daughter has once again been approached for photographs, this time via ebay, by someone wanting to buy pictures of ladies feet! She has also declined the offer; at the moment, I suspect, she is better at buying than selling: she wanted to offer a discount on the skirt she just sold (for £1.70) because the buyer asked if she would consider sending it by 2nd class post. My advice was that I'm sure the standard rate will be fine, and the buyer probably has more money than she does. "But Mum," she cried, "He's from the North East!" I'm not sure what her vision of the North East must be, to be provoking such an empassioned reaction...evidently her study of humanities at school, rolling history and geography into one subject, has left her none the wiser. However, she does have a GCSE in forensics, which is bound to serve her very well in her chosen career in musical theatre!
My home-schooled daughter learned carpet-fitting today, which I feel counts as a cross-curricular activity, followed by how to assemble and decorate a Christmas Tree, which is not just design technology, but a discussion on the relative merits of real and artificial trees.
There is no requirement to follow a set curriculum; when she is older I will encourage her to consider her alternative options but, at present, she is tackling, enthusiastically, a child-led range of topics. We all have our own styles of learning, in every area of life. The "battle" with my son is happening because he wants to work in IT and I don't have the facilities for him to learn what he needs to at home. He knows what he needs, and knows what he does not....in his opinion! Knowing him, he is probably right.

Kids, an endless source of learning and inspiration. Your's sound well centered. Wish I had had such clear ideas at that age.
